What problem are you solving, and why is it important?
Muggle Quidditch is played by 600 teams in 25 countries. In just over five? Six? years since the sport’s invention at Middlebury College, it as become an international phenomenon. Yet, until Quiyk’s launch last November, the sport had no apparel standardization. As a sport grows it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain any sort of legitimacy without standardized equipment. Quiyk was created to help solve that problem.
How did your team come together to solve this problem?
When co-founders Matt Lowe and Eric Wahl watched Quidditch for the first time, they immediately recognized the sport’s need for standardization. Players were wearing everything from jeans to sweaters, and uniforms consisted of t-shirts with team names written in pen. Additionally, the Golden Snitch, a player that essentially decides the outcome of the game, used a sock with a tennis ball tucked into athletic shorts. Within weeks, Lowe and Wahl began brainstorming ideas and ways to address the sport’s deficiencies. After multiple mockups and prototypes, Quiyk finalized and began the production and sale of the Quiyk Snitch Shorts, the first product created specifically for Muggle Quidditch with the help of the International Quidditch Association. Along with the Snitch Shorts, Quiyk’s first run of products included basic performance wear shirts and shorts, quidditch specific shirts, and IQA licensed goods. Since the company’s launch in November of 2011 at the 5th Annual Quidditch World Cup in New York City, Lowe and Wahl have added Gemma Simko (Marketing), Nadav Swarttz (Sales), and Ryan Catalani (Web Development) to the Quiyk team.
What do you expect to accomplish by the end of the summer?
By the end of the summer we hope to streamline our USA based manufacturing in Los Angeles, California, rebuild our website, and foster the development our long-term partnership with the IQA.
However, the most important goal for Quiyk is to meet mentors and advisors that can lead us in the correct direction and help facilitate the growth of the company.
